Responses by 2008 Independent Election Candidates to ACTEA Issues Paper
We sent the Equestrian Issues paper to 52 candidates across all electorates and parties, including Independents. The following are the views of those who replied. Also included are some responses to direct representations by ACTEA affiliates and these are labelled accordingly.
ACTEA does not propose to take a position on these responses as your vote is a personal matter and takes into account many other issues besides your sporting or recreational activities. We provide this information as a service to assist you in your decision
Adam Verwey
Independent Candidate for Ginninderra
Thanks for your email. To be honest, I wasn't previously aware of the
various equestrian issues in the ACT and I thank you for bringing them to
my attention. I'm particularly concerned about the Bicentennial National
Trail and think it is very important that the trail is maintained and
supported as part of any further development.
Generally I am supportive of all sports and activities which keep
Canberrans active, and I'm very much supportive of maintaining Canberra's
open spaces.
I wish you good luck with your lobbying in the lead up to the election and
look forward to hearing from you again if I'm elected.

PANGALLO INDEPENDENTS PARTY Candidate for Molonglo
The Pangallo Independents are about representing the ACT community. Decision-making needs to be transparent and the community interest will need to be represented in that process. I believe the independents will do a better job because they don’t have to push the party line. Our constitution makes it clear that each of our candidates is free to independently develop positions with community leaders and these will not be reviewed back in the party room. In this way your position will be safeguarded.
The Pangallo Independents believe the Molonglo development provides an opportunity to establish a building environment that is more responsive to climate change. Our policies for urban development place top priority on energy efficient design and to adapting to living with less water and higher temperatures. Under that scenario green areas will become very important in combating increased heat and in protecting our biodiversity. For example, we do not want the mistakes of Gungahlin to be repeated and support the Conservation Council’s proposals for Molonglo - like the establishment of the Kama Reserve, preservation of the green corridor along the river and no dam.
Our policies for planning and development include bringing a halt to the privatization and commercialization of large tracts of the territory’s public spaces. With that comes the responsibility for maintaining the open spaces.
We believe our approach to urban planning is consistent with supporting the integration of the Bicentennial National Trail and for the safe linking of equestrian trails to the existing equestrian facilities.
We are pleased to see that you were recently successful in securing a government grant and would want to work with the ACT Equestrian Association to guarantee facilities for the sport and other horse related activities into the future.
